Local business request for alcohol permit may crumble before teetotaling city council
Saying alcohol is “a poison and a menace to any community,” Logan Councilman Gene Needham said he would absolutely vote against a local business’ request for a liquor license when the issue comes up at Tuesday’s meeting.
“Nobody deserves it,” the teetotaling local gallery owner said. “Nobody should have it.”
Needham’s words come in advance of an application by Crumb Brothers Artisan Bread for a liquor license that owners said is almost exclusively intended to allow their popular local bakery to sell mimosas during Sunday brunch. Ultimately, the matter will be decided by the state, but Crumb brothers general manager Robert Sanderson said getting the nod from the Logan Municipal Council could make the path to a license easier.
Sanderson said he hopes Crumb Brothers, which has been in business for 13 years and re-opened last year after a six-month hiatus, has demonstrated enough community value to permit a limited adult drink menu.
He noted that Crumb Brothers supports the Bridgerland Folk Music Society, Four Paws Rescue, local elementary schools, law enforcement, and the food pantry.
“I’m really excited for the city council to talk about it, to leave it open for the community to voice their concerns and their support,” Sanderson said. “No matter how we grow the one thing we want to keep in mind is community value because that’s really what creates a good living environment.”
But Needham said there is no argument that would persuade him to support a business owner’s desire to sell any amount of alcohol. He believes Logan has fewer problems than communities because local government has taken a hard stand against alcohol for more than 100 years.
