Jalen Moore just hit 1,000 career points. Here’s why 1,164 will be even better.

Sure, 1,000 was sweet. But for Jalen Moore, 1,164 will be even sweeter.

The Utah State University junior, who reached 1,000 career points against the Colorado State Rams on Feb. 17, said his next goal is to surpass his father — Utah State Hall of Famer James “Jimmy” Moore.

“I’m coming for him,” Jalen Moore said. “I want to pass him.”

Jimmy Moore had a total of 1,164 points in his former Aggie career. He was named to the Utah State All-Century basketball team and was installed into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It’s not something that you come into Utah State thinking — that you’ll reach the 1,000 point club,” Jimmy Moore said.

Just 37 Aggies have reached that mark — and now, Jimmy Moore marveled, his son is in the club, too. And far from being worried that his ranking in that group will drop, Jimmy Moore said he’s cheering hard for his son.

“He’s definitely going to surpass me because he has another year to go,” Moore said. “What a honor that would be to have your own son surpass you.”

With 4:17 left in the second half against the Rams, Jalen Moore made a three-point jumper with an assist from junior guard Shane Rector. That pushed the score to 68-55 in favor of the Aggies, who went on to win 72-59.

Jalen Moore said he was unaware the shot would push him over the 1,000 point mark.

“I actually didn’t know that,” he said. “It would’ve been easier if I could’ve made some free throws.”

He missed three of four shots from the line that night, but still helped lead the game, scoring 16 points — just trailing senior guard Chris Smith, who scored 19.

It was the sixth straight game that Moore had scored in double figures. He also had seven rebounds on the night.

Aggie redshirt junior Lew Evans said most of the players already knew how close their teammate was to the 1,000 point mark, and noted that head coach Tim Duryea gave Moore a special recognition in the locker room after the game.

“Jalen Moore is Logan’s finest,” Evans said of his friend and teammate, known both for his basketball skills and personal style. “He’s the man out here — everywhere you go, with the afro. It's good for him and his family.”

Jimmy Moore was there to see his son hit the mark.

“I was running down to the court after the game,” Jimmy Moore said. “I wanted him to keep the basketball as a souvenir.”

He did.
